Add your feature by clicking on Draw and select the type of feature you want to draw.
Once drawn and the features is selected click on the buffer tool.
Ignore the buffer setting and just slide the subtract toggle to on and click OK.
The area will now have been subtracted from the underlying feature - if needed you can then delete the drawn feature to create a gap.
